Thursday Day 5 - Clear Lake to Algona - 57 miles

Today's ride was the "Windmill and Hobo" ride. We passed an endless stream of windmills going off as far as you could see in either direction, near Garner Iowa. And we stopped in to visit the Hobo Museum in Britt. We ended up riding about 57 miles, including a bicycle ride to a nice dinner at a fancy restaurant named Emerald's.

The day started off nice and cool. It was so cool Barbara wore her long sleeve jacket when we started out. It stayed nice all day, with weather in the low 80s.

When we first saw the windmills, they were about 3 miles away and none were turning. The wind was calm. But by the time we got up to them, almost all were spinning, whoosh-whoosh-whoosh. We came upon one near the road, sitting in a corn field, and the gate was unlocked. We snuck up to the windmill and touched it !! It was pretty exciting - something I've wanted to do for a long time.

We headed up to Britt and ate lunch in an old bar, J & D's Hob Nob. Doc and I had tenderloin sammies. After lunch we walked down to the Hobo Museum. The town of Britt started having a Hobo Days Celebration way back in 1900. The museum had lots of neat hobo stuff - clothes, camp gear, musical instruments, and crafts that the hobos made to sell. We also watched a movie about hobos. This was our culture for today !

The rest of the ride was nice, but we ran into a little headwind. No hills, and the nicest temperature yet. We stopped at Johnny's Bar in Wesley for some beer and ice cream.

We are staying at another nice motel tonight - THANKS Barbara for making the trip plans & arrangements !! We rode our bikes about 2 miles to eat dinner tonight. Riding back to motel in the dark was fun. Tomorrow we're off to Spencer.
