Friday Day 6 - Algona to Spencer- 70 miles

Today was the "Bagger" ride. We've been looking for other bicycles loaded up with bags on tour across Iowa, and we finally ran into Derrick from Colorado. Derrick is on a full tour, with camping gear and everything.

The weather today was great, from 76 in the morning to 92 in the late afternoon. We had a nice tail wind for most of the day, and our route was pretty flat, except for two monster hills near Greenville. We ended up with 70 miles total.

The day started off nice, with a great breakfast at Hi-Vee. We rode west out of town on roads B40 and B55 through Whittmote and Rodman. We stopped a few times in the corn fields along the way, since there wasn't much in the way of bars, restaurants or gas stations.

It was along this stretch that we spied Derrick, a ways ahead on his bicycle. Doc sped up to try to catch him, but zoomed right by him while he was pulled off the road. We all rode together for the next 30-40 miles, stopping in Ayrshire to eat lunch at the Silver Lake Cafe. it was a good lunch, and Mike gave the owner's grand-daughter $5 for "watching" our bicycles while we ate.

Derrick is a very strong rider, but he was impressed when Doc sped by him in his large chain ring going up a hill. Derrick said "Doc never downshifts, he just stays in the same gear". Doc and Derrick spent most of the afternoon sprinting out ahead of the pack.

We stopped by a bar in Gillette Grove, but it was closed, so we went into the DeadHeads Motorcycle shop next door. They were real nice and we drank sodas and water while hanging out. Doc bought Barbara a cute set of short-shorts to wear over her riding shorts. Ha !!

We rode to Greenville, once again looking for a bar, but it too was closed. So we said Goodbye to Derrick and headed north to our motel in Spencer.

We did make a nice stop on the way to the motel. We passed a Moose Lodge, and Mike and Kendra belong to this fraternal group. Mike went in and talked the local Moose Governor into opening up an hour early do we could have a few beers. While we were there, lots of Moose members showed up, including about 15 Moose Riders on their motorcycles. We had a great time, and Doc, Barbara and I can't wait to join up with the Moose Club in Tallahassee !!

After checking in the motel, we went for a swim. Later, we ate a nice dinner at a Sports Bar near the motel while watching the Tour de France. It was a great day !!

This is our last motel for awhile. Tomorrow we meet up with our Team Sprint buddies in Sioux Center for RAGBRAI - Yahoo !!
